How roof bracing works

A strap or angle restrains a member by wrapping it and being fixed on more than one face, so the load it resists is carried into the member rather than into a handful of nails on one side.

Bracing not bent onto the side and bottom of the member, on two separate Austral frame inspections, one of them at high severity.

Why it looks finished

Because it is fixed. Every nail is in and the strap is where the plan shows it. The failure is in the geometry rather than in the number of fixings.

The related findings

On the same jobs: a tie down bolt missing, another needing more tension, additional fixing required to a metal strap angle, and a fixing missed on plywood bracing. Bracing fails by degrees, not all at once.
