What the bottom plate does

It is the timber the wall studs sit on, and it is how the wall transfers load into the floor or slab below. Under a bracing wall it also carries the racking load the bracing collects.

Why a break matters

The load path assumes continuity. Interrupt the plate under a bracing wall and the racking load has to find another route, usually through fixings that were never sized for it.

How it happens

A plate cut for a service, a doorway set out late, or two lengths that never met. It is easy to do and easy to miss.

Fixing it

At frame stage, splicing or replacing the plate. After lining, it is an investigation and an engineer.
